Module 2: Elements and Symbols – Foundational Chemistry

๐Ÿงช Module 2: Elements and Symbols – Foundational Chemistry Notes for Suharshi

Written in clear, easy language with examples and explanations tailored for beginners.

๐Ÿ“˜ Module 2: Elements and Symbols

๐Ÿ”น 1. What Are Elements?

An element is a pure substance made up of only one kind of atom.

๐Ÿ” Key Points:

  • It cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

  • All the atoms in an element are the same in terms of number of protons.

๐Ÿง  Think of elements as the basic building blocks of everything in the universe.

Examples of elements:

  • Hydrogen (H) – lightest element

  • Oxygen (O) – gas we breathe

  • Carbon (C) – found in our body, in food, in coal

  • Gold (Au) – a shiny, soft metal used in jewelry

๐Ÿ“Œ There are more than 100 known elements.

Out of them, about 92 are naturally occurring, and the rest are man-made (synthetic).

๐Ÿ”น 2. The Periodic Table – A Beginner’s Glance

The Periodic Table is a chart that shows all the known elements arranged in a special order based on their properties.

๐Ÿงฉ You can think of it like a magical map of all the elements.

๐Ÿงช Basic Structure:

  • Each box represents an element.

  • Each element is represented by:

    • A symbol (like H or Na)

    • Atomic number (number of protons in the atom)

    • Atomic mass (mass of the atom)

Example:

Symbol Name Atomic Number
H Hydrogen 1
He Helium 2
O Oxygen 8
Na Sodium 11
Cl Chlorine 17

๐Ÿง  Fun Fact: The elements are arranged in rows called periods and columns called groups. Elements in the same group have similar properties!

๐Ÿ”น 3. Chemical Symbols

Each element has a short form called its chemical symbol.

๐Ÿ’ก Some symbols come from English names, while others come from Latin names.

Examples:

English Name Symbol Latin Name (if different)
Hydrogen H
Oxygen O
Sodium Na Natrium
Iron Fe Ferrum
Potassium K Kalium
Gold Au Aurum
Silver Ag Argentum

๐Ÿ”  Rules for writing symbols:

  • The first letter is always capital.

  • The second letter (if present) is small.

  • Never write both letters capital (e.g., NA ❌, correct: Na ✅)

๐Ÿ“ Common Symbols to Memorize (Top 20 Elements):

Atomic No. Element Symbol
1 Hydrogen H
2 Helium He
3 Lithium Li
4 Beryllium Be
5 Boron B
6 Carbon C
7 Nitrogen N
8 Oxygen O
9 Fluorine F
10 Neon Ne
11 Sodium Na
12 Magnesium Mg
13 Aluminium Al
14 Silicon Si
15 Phosphorus P
16 Sulfur S
17 Chlorine Cl
18 Argon Ar
19 Potassium K
20 Calcium Ca

๐ŸŽฏ Activities to Reinforce Learning

๐Ÿƒ Activity 1: Flashcards Game

Make flashcards with:

  • One side: Element name

  • Other side: Symbol and atomic number

Practice daily. You can also color-code metals, non-metals, and noble gases.

๐Ÿง  Activity 2: Memory Game

Create cards for element names and separate cards for symbols.

Shuffle and play a matching game to match the correct symbol to its element.

✍️ Activity 3: Mini Test (Practice)

Fill in the blanks:

  • The symbol of Potassium is ______.

  • Fe stands for ___________.

  • __________ is the element whose symbol is O.

  • The atomic number of Carbon is _______.

๐Ÿงฉ Activity 4: Draw Your Own Periodic Mini-Chart

Use the top 20 elements and arrange them in boxes with symbols and atomic numbers.

๐Ÿ“Œ Summary:

  • Elements are pure substances made of the same kind of atoms.

  • Each element has a unique chemical symbol.

  • The Periodic Table organizes elements based on their properties.

  • Learning the symbols and names of the first 20 elements is essential for all future chemistry learning.
